Wedding anniversaries gifts is thought to have originated in Central Europe. In medieval Germany, friends customarily presented a wife with a wreath of silver on her 25th wedding anniversary, the silver representing the harmony that had been necessary to last so long. Similarly, after fifty years the wife was presented with a golden wreath. Thus the silver wedding and golden wedding arose, and this has been elaborated upon in modern times. In some European countries, a copper wreath is used to celebrate twelve and a half years of marriage.
There are two Diamond Anniversaries. The 75th is the original diamond anniversary, and the 60th was added when Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee on the 60th anniversary of accession to the throne in 1897.
